Monster Crab

I went crabbing at Tokeland for the first time. Spent about 4 hours in the sun, pulling crab pots every 20 minutes. Guess how many crabs I caught? ONE! It's more like half a crab actually because it was missing a claw and 3 legs. You win some, you lose some.

Kites

Couple of days ago, I went to the Kite Festival in Long Beach, WA. It was foggy, chilly, and... windy, which is great for flying kites! Heading toward the front entrance to the beach, the sky was litter with kites of all shapes and sizes. Very cool to see!

John D.

Study of the main character for a 4 page comic. Inspiration from seeing a homeless guy walking in the field, next to the freeway.

WA Renaissance Fantasy Faire

I went to my first renaissance faire today. It's in Buckley which is about 50 minutes south of Bellevue. It was pretty cool experience. There are lot of merchants selling everything from jewelry to swords. For food, I recommend the turkey drumstick, root beer you can get in a blue bottle, and the shave ice cone.
There are also 3 different stages showing plays, jugglers, and magic acts.
There were lots of people dressed up. Anything close to renaissance is fair game so I saw barbarians, pirates (yes, there's a Jack Sparrow), and elfs. One guy even dressed up as Doctor Who (David Tennant version) which is a time lord so he could've show up in that time period. ;)
Academia della Spada- These guys demo how people fight with swords. After watching for about 5 minutes, I learned the key to dueling... it's "geometry". What does that mean?.... well guess you have to go there to find out.
Cavallo Equestrian Arts- The coolest act is the horse riding show. This group did a lot of tricks on horse back. One guy juggled with knives while standing on the hores. Anyone one did a back flip from one horse to another.

The fair is still going on for one more weekend so if you're interested... check out:

Heat wave!

This week in the northwest, there was a heat wave which brought temperature of 100+ degree (which never happen before in Seattle!). Today, it was a little more tolerable. Can't wait to get some rain.... oh man, I can't believe I just said that.

Death Race

I was doodling when I was watching Death Race starring Jason Statham and Joan Allen. I was also trying to do a comic style page all on the computer. The lines are looser but the plus side is no scanning... penciling and inking phase are combined.

Anyway, if there's a Death Race comic, I think it'll be good to have the comic take place right before the movie starts so you can see how the characters interact before Statham's character shows up.

Moon Landing

Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. How freakin' cool is that?

V.I.N.CENT

Remember "Black Hole" from Disney in 1979? I remember thinking the black hole look so real. The story was really dark for Disney. I would not recommend letting really small kids watch this flick. And VINCENT (Vital Information Necessary CENTralized)... he's pretty cool for a floating robot. He's the real hero of the film!

The idea to this pic came up when I found out they are doing a vinyl toy of Vincent. It just brought back the memory of watching that film. If anyone going to SDCC, would you mind buying one for me? ;)

Stillsuit

I can’t top the movie version of the Stillsuits… so my take is pretty similar except to incorporate the spiral design. The sandworms is such an important focus to the Freman, I think they would mimic the sandworm look. The cloak is also tie in a spiral for that “desert fashion” look. The cloak could also be use to camouflage in the sand or even be made into an emergency one man tent to weather out a sand storm. The Maker Hook, is what the Fremen use to pry open a section of the sandworms’ ring so they could ride the worm.

...desert planet. A Fremen watches as couple of sandworms cruising in the deep desert.

Crysknife

Crysknife is the scared weapon of the Fremen, made from the tooth of a dead sandworm. This is their primary weapon since lasguns and shields cause vibrations, which attracts the worms.

Paul Atreides

This is Paul Atreides from Dune. The Fremen call him "Muad'Did" by this point and his eyes changed to blue by the spice melange. If you understand all that... congrats, you're a scifi nerd.

Sandworm 2

Another take of the sandworm from Dune. I picture them to be more flexible and be able to compress their body when it open their mouths.

Baron again...

Another take on the Baron Harkonnen... this time showing scale with the anti gravity "suspensors". It works just enough to get his feet off the ground.

If they use this type of design for another Dune movie, the actor can enter the Baron costume from the back so the scifi tech can hide the zipper. Poke his face and hands through then apply make up/prosthetics to blend in with the rest of the suit. :)

Baron Harkonnen

My take on Baron Harkonnen from Dune. He's so large that he wears a anti grav belt so he can move or the weight of his body would crash him.

I thought this would be good for "unfold". :) This is my first paper toy... made from scratch! It's pretty simple to put together. Click on the pic above and save it on to you computer. Print it out on a card stock, cut, fold, and glue. That's it!

Land of the Lost

I kinda remember the original Land of the Lost show. But I really dig the trailers. It looks funny... and I like the design for the Sleestak. You can't beat a guy wearing a rubber monster costume.

Mech Trooper

This is basically a tank. There's room for the pilot and gunner. The advantage of using this would be for urban warfare... where it's more mobile in the streets and alleys. If the war zone is in the city, the first thing people would do is to destroy the streets and put up blockade. So having a mech would be useful.

Sandworm

Here's my take on the sandworm in Dune...one of my all time fav book! I want to make it more "worm" like so it's thinner on the front and end. The mouth close together to a point and the rings on the body is in a spirl, so it spin clockwise as it digs into the sand.
