Gallery party report

Last Friday, we had the launch/gallery party at All City Coffee. It was a blast with James McDaniel as our DJ and free Neon Brown cd given out with Atomic Lead comic purchase.

Here's the signing table where all the artists sketch on the back of the comic.

Above... few pieces of original pages by Dev Madan.

Overall, everything went pretty smoothly. The one bad thing is.... I split beer over the Steve (the owner of All City Coffee) pants. Sorry Steve! I'm such a klutz.

Thanks Paul for letting me use the photos. Tomorrow, photos from the Emerald City ComiCon.

Scarlet Fields:cover comp

Scarlet Field is a comic that I hope to finish up and be out sometime this year. I wrote, pencil, and in the process of inking it. Haven't done a whole book like this in about 10+ years. Allen Freeman is going to color it.

This is the first comp for the cover. There's going to be lots more tweaks and addition to the art.

Fan-Atic Press is publishing the book!

Another one bites the dust...

One of my favorite comic stores is called, Wonderworld books, in Burien, WA. It's one of those old school stores where the comic boxes placed everywhere down the isle and you can buy anything from toys to role-playing games. In the back, there's a little area where I've seen kids play card games or sometimes, role-playing games. From what I heard from my friend that grew up in Burien, this store have been there for a for a looooong time.

Well, I found out that this weekend... the store is going to close. Looks like they're not moving to a new location but just keep doing their business through their site. It's just sad that little Timmy had one less place to go to pick up his issue of Spiderman. Well, Timmy might just give up collecting comics and stick with playing video games or watching TV. This is why the comic industry is hurting. No stores for people to go and less people buying comics and less stores could stay in business.... a destructive cycle that's killing the comic industry. What's the answer... I'm not sure. What do you think?

Kamen Rider: the First

When I lived in Hong Kong, I would watch dubbed version of live action Japanese superhero shows like the Power Rangers. The monster's costumes were kinda bad and there's really no story. Just good old fashion good guys beating on the bad guys....pretty campy but I love it.

Kamen Riders were one of the first of these type of shows. They still making them in Japan. Last November, they remade the first Kamen Riders into a movie. Check out their official website.

I'll be the first in line to get the dvd when/ if it ever release in the US.

Rain and more rain!

I think it's been raining like 24 days straight now in Seattle. It's kinda depressing. Guess that's the price we pay for all the green trees in the northwest.

Anyway, the sketch is just a doodle when I was watching tv.

Battlestar Galactica

When I first heard about a new Battlestar Galactica series... I rolled my eyes and thought it's going to be another cheesy scifi show. By chance, I stumble on to the pilot mini-series and got hooked right away. The show is really well done, the cast is great, and the story keeps you coming back for more. It's a really dark story and right off the bat, the Cylon kicked the human's behind. There's no hope for the good guys to win... the best that they can hope for is a clean escape, which makes every little victory all the more important.

New episodes are starting this Friday (Jan. 6th) on the Scifi channel. Don't miss it!

A'OK... NOT!

More then 10 years ago, I drew a 4 issue mini-series called, "A'ok." The first issue did okay, but the other three... didn't do so good. I was a rookie and bitten off more then I can handle. Let's just say... its not my best work. Plus, back then... I did everything by hand (lettering, talk balloons, air brush cover) even the tones were cut with an x-acto blade. Now that's old school.

Angelina?

I was looking at Angelina Jolie on the over of a magazine when I drew this. It sorta... kinda look like her but not really. Anyway, this was done a while ago when Mr. and Mrs. Smith was in the theater. Turns out this was one of those big celeb news of 2005 with the whole Brad and Jen split.

Oh... about the grey strip on the left side of the pic, that's the binder in my sketch book. Adjusting the levels after scanning didn't help so I gave up and left it in.

Happy New Year!

Wow... it's another year already....how time pass. 2006 is looking pretty busy for me... got couple of comic projects that need to be completed, Emerald Comic Con is in Apirl (see Atomic Lead blog on the right), and the day job is gear up. Doesn't look like I'll have any free time till June!

Anyway, hope everyone have a great year!

Astro Boy

For Christmas, I got the complete series to Astro Boy. This is the updated verison of Tezuka Osamu's classic series. It ran in the US for about a month before it was cancelled. So the only way to see the whole story is to get this dvd set.

I remember this character from my childhood. Back then, I have an Astro Boy model kit. The model only have two joints, one for each shoulders and that was it. It was stuck in the flying pose but I love it anyway.

This sketch took about two hours including coloring in photoshop.

Naughty or Nice?

So, what's up with the rude/grumpy shoppers? They bump into you, cut in front of the line, steal your parking, so they could get their present one minute earlier then you. This is the season of giving... remember? Everyone, just chill out... you'll get your gifts in time.... but just don't try to steal Santa's xbox 360 or he'll bust your behind.

Play nice and have a merry x-mas.

Super Real variant cover

Super Real is a comic by Jason Martin.
http://superrealgraphics.com/news.html

I ran into him at San Diego Comic Con '05 and he gave me a great deal on his comic. What a nice guy! To say "thank you"... I drew a fan art of one of his character. Turns out, he liked it well enough to use as a variant cover for issue two of his comic.

Go to his site and check out his work and purchase Super Real at your local comic store.

Joker sketch

This is an entry to Skullbaby's Joker challenge.
http://skullbabyland.blogspot.com/

Even with a straight jacket.... I still wouldn't want to go near this guy, especailly with a razor blade between his teeth. You never know what he can do to you.

Where is Batman when you need him.

Karma

In 2000, I joined a company called Hulabee Entertainment. It's a little company formed by Shelley Day and Ron Gilbert. Everything was fine until two years into it... things started to go wrong. I'm not going to get into the specifics but by early 2003, I could not afford to stay there anymore and left the company. Yes... I was upset at what happened but life is too short to dwell on the negative and I moved on.

Now, back to the present.... this article appear on the web:

*CHILDREN'S PUBLISHER JAILED FOR 30 MONTHS*from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer News Services:

A former Mercer Island woman was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison Friday for defrauding a bank by forging documents to bolster her application for large loans.Shelley Day, 45, was a founder of Humongous Entertainment, which became the third-largest publisher of children's software and created such well-known characters as Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam.Her lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Thomas Zilly to defer her sentence until April because she is developing a children's game that could be quite profitable. But Zilly rejected the request.

The morale of this story... sooner of later, it all comes back around in a circle of life sort of a thing. Karma... young grasshopper... it's all karma.
